What To Look And Feel For In Optimum Antivirus Application: Perfect ...

In case you have ever had a critical malware or virus infection on your Windows pc, you realize the concerns it can result in. Compromised safety, harm to your applications and files, unpredictable browser behavior, and so on.

Very likely 1 of the disappointments was that the antivirus or anti-malware software program you were making use of didn?t safeguard your computer system from the infection.

Within this series of brief articles we?ll show you learn how to make an antivirus firewall that is made to guard your computer system from trojan virus, malware, adware, and spyware infections. The amount of protection for your pc are going to be far greater than something you have got used before. The moment you full all of the methods we show you within the articles, your laptop or computer will likely be totally immunized and protected from viruses and malware having a firewall that runs 5 levels deep. It?ll be virtually impossible for any trojan, virus or malware infection to take hold on your personal computer.

It does not take significantly time to make the firewall, as well as the nice point is, it does not have to be high priced. You do not have to be a computer system genius, either. The easy-to-use software package we?ll inform you about will do it all for you.

Developing the firewall consists of 5 steps:

1. Utilizing a good antivirus program. When we say ?effective? we imply a program which has tested from 98% to 99% beneficial at getting and eliminating recognized virus threats. Objective testing for antivirus computer software is accomplished by internet websites like AV Comparatives

2. Combining the antivirus system with an excellent anti-malware program, like the ones which are advised by Spyware Warrior A good number of of the anti-malware programs now come with an antivirus engine or database, which tends to make them really reliable when combined with a principal antivirus system, and also the perfect factor is, they may be absolutely compatible. This implies that after you mix the best programs you get practically double the protection of a single software system.

3. Working with a good firewall, configured effectively. The Windows firewall is perfectly sufficient, provided the settings are appropriate. (Don?t allow exceptions) A third-party firewall may also be made use of.

4. Constructing a bullet proof internet browser. The one we recommend is Firefox, with ad-ons like AdBlock Plus, Internet Of Trust (WOT), and probably a script blocker.

five. Last, but undoubtedly not least, is definitely the development of an effective hosts file within the Windows Technique 32 folder as well as the addition of an outstanding restricted internet sites list and blocked activeX controls list to guard internet explorer. The moment once again, you will not have to do much here, the software package will do it all for you personally. The whole procedure is simple..

The spot to start is using the right mixture of antivirus and anti-malware application. It?s important to combine the computer software very carefully, as a poor mixture can do even more harm than superior and possibly harm your system.

Vegan Mofo Day 31: Poutine FTW! ? The Vegan Cookbook Aficionado

Holy crap, I can?t believe it?s the last day of mofo already, the month flew by! As fun as this was and as much as I love blogging, hot damn do I need a break; all this cooking, photo taking, photo editing, typing, commenting, etc. can take its toll on a gal. Kudos to all those who managed to post every day during the month, as much as I wish I could have done it, I really appreciated those weekends off. I?m pleased to say that I stuck to my Canadian theme the entire month and I saved the best for last. No self-respecting Canadian can discuss Canadian cuisine without mention the ever so famous poutine!

I?ve consumed more than my fair share of poutine over the years, there used to be a local place in my hometown where, as teenagers, we used to hang out and drink coffee. On top of the ever flowing coffee I chugged back (no wonder we were up all hours of the night) they used to serve pizza, subs and the best poutine ever! Man I loved that poutine, crispy fries, rich gravy, greasy cheese, I ate that poutine way more often then I probably should have. I don?t think I?ve had poutine since leaving home and I definitely have never made it myself, but that?s all changed now and there?s no going back, I?ve (re)succumbed to the mighty poutine, and it was awesome!

I?m sure most of you have heard of poutine before, but let?s do a little rundown, shall we? The poutine is a dish that originated in Quebec and consists of French fries, brown gravy and cheese curds, you can get it at almost any greasy spoon in Canada and some international fast food giants have even picked it up, distributing their own version. Well my version is just a tad better than those gross fast food chains, first I started with some crispy hand cut fries. To bring the fries to their crispy potential, I first soaked them in some warm water to remove some of the starches, than I dried them off and dredged them in a cornstarch slurry (wow does that word sound gross), then they?re baked at a high temperature so you end up with an incredibly crisp coated fry. With a little help from Tofu N Sproutz, I came up with a thick, rich, brown gravy to pour over top. I got a little lazy with the cheese and just used some Daiya, I figured making two things from scratch was my threshold for effort.

This was so good!!! So much so that I feel like adding extra exclamations points!!! The fries were some of the best I?ve made, thick, crispy perfection. The cheese was all creamy and melty, and the gravy, oh the gravy (swoon), this right here is what greasy dreams are made of. As gung ho as I was about this, I have to admit that it was so filling that I couldn?t finish all of mine and gave the extra to P?who happily accepted.

Poutine

French Fry Ingredients:?

  • 2-4 large russet potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

?Gravy Ingredients:

  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons earth balance margarine
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups water
  • 3 teaspoons no-beef broth powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • Kitchen Bouquet (optional)
  • 1/4 cup Daiya cubed pepperjack
  • 1/2 cup Daiya shredded mozzarella

Directions:

French Fries: Adjust an oven rack to the lowest position and preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Scrub the potatoes and cut them, lengthwise, into 10 to 12 even wedges.

Place the sliced potatoes into a large bowl and cover them with hot water. Let them soak for 10 minutes (this releases some of the starch in the potatoes and lets them absorb moisture, which leads to crisp outsides and moist interiors).

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Drain the potatoes and pat them dry thoroughly with a clean tea towel or paper towels. Evenly toss the potatoes with the cornstarch, than add the oil, salt and pepper.

Arrange the fries in a single layer on the baking sheet. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and toss the fries to loosen and flip them. Continue to bake until the fries are golden and crisp, about another 20 to 25 minutes longer. Rotate the pan as necessary to help them brown evenly. Adjust seasoning and serve hot.

Gravy: Saut? onion with a bit of oil until it begins to brown. Add the water, broth powder, Worcestershire sauce and liquid smoke. Simmer over low heat until reduced to about 2 cups.

Strain broth mixture through a sieve into a bowl; press the onions to get all the liquid out and then discard solids. Or if you?d prefer a more oniony gravy, blend the ingredients together until smooth. Set aside.

In a large skillet, melt margarine over medium-high heat. Add the flour, and mix with margarine to form a paste

Stirring constantly, cook a few minutes or until the flour begins to turn slightly brown. Turn heat down to low, then slowly mix in 1/4 cup of the broth at a time, whisking thoroughly between each addition.

Turn heat back up to medium-high to bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce heat to bring it to a simmer. Whisking constantly, simmer the gravy until it thickens.

Adjust seasonings to taste. Mix in Kitchen Bouquet, start with 1/2 teaspoon and add a little at a time until desired color is reached.

To serve: Place fries on plate and sprinkle with cheese (if you don?t have both kinds of cheese, just use one or the other). While still warm, pour gravy over fries and cheese. Let cheese melt slightly and enjoy!

Gravy adapted from Tofu N Sprouts

Although I made a hell of alotta Canadian recipes, I?m a little sad I wasn?t able to make everything I was hoping too, there were just too many! And don?t think for one second that I?ve given up on those buttertarts, I?m hoping to revisit those little buggers as soon as we get closer to Christmas. I hope you all enjoyed Vegan Mofo this year! I had a great time finding new blogs and catching up on some of my old favorites, now the only questions is, what am I going to do with all this free time?!

Crew rescued from HMS Bounty as hurricane rages; captain missing

(Reuters) - The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 14 of the 16 crew members who abandoned the replica tall ship HMS Bounty off North Carolina in rough seas caused by Hurricane Sandy, using helicopters on Monday to pluck them from life rafts.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter later recovered crew member Claudene Christian, 42, who was described as unresponsive, while continuing to search for the 63-year-old captain of the ship, which sank in 18-foot seas.

Christian taken to Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, where a hospital spokesman said she was in "critical condition."

The crew of the Bounty took to life rafts about 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina when the vessel began to take on water about 160 miles from the storm's eye, the Coast Guard said.

The three-mast, 180-foot (55-meter) ship, built for the 1962 movie "Mutiny on the Bounty," sank after water pumps apparently failed.

As the 16 crew members were abandoning the Bounty wearing cold-water survival suits and life jackets, the final three on board were washed overboard, said Coast Guard spokesman Chief Nyx Cangemi, relaying eyewitness reports from the search and rescue team. One of them was pulled onto a life raft but the other two remained at sea, he said.

The 14 were rescued from two lifeboats with canopies, the Coast Guard said.

A C-130 Hercules airplane and a third rescue helicopter continued the search for the two missing crew members, and two Coast Guard cutters were on the way to assist them, Cangemi said.

VETERAN CAPTAIN

Captain Robin Walbridge worked on the Bounty for 17 years, said his wife, Claudia McCann, contacted by telephone at the couple's home in St. Petersburg, Florida.

"That was his passion," McCann said. "He's the best captain in the industry. ... There's not too many captains that can sail that kind of ship."

She said she was confident that he, as captain, was the last to leave the ship, wearing survival gear.

"That's the image I have in my head. I'm sure he made sure his crew were all tucked in their life boats before he got off the ship," McCann said.

The ship was on its way from New London, Connecticut, to St. Petersburg, Florida, said Tracie Simonin, director of the HMS Bounty Organization LLC. She said she was unsure how the captain attempted to navigate the storm.

"My understanding is that they were looking to sail around the hurricane," said Jane Pena, 31, who piloted the first rescue helicopter to reach the scene.

"They originally thought they'd be OK," Pena said. "We thought about flying deep water pumps out to them, but they were taking on so much water that we wouldn't be able to get enough pumps to them."

The vessel was taking on water and also without propulsion, stuck in 40 mile-per-hour winds and heavy seas, the Coast Guard said.

"By the time we got there, the ship was submerged but it was upright and you could see the three masts sticking out of the water," said Pena.

The original Bounty, a British transport vessel, gained infamy for a mutiny in Tahiti in 1789.

The 1962 movie starred Marlon Brando as lead mutineer Fletcher Christian. The replica Bounty has appeared in numerous documentaries and feature films including "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" with Johnny Depp, according to the ship's website.

Storm's cost may hit $50B; rebuilding to ease blow

The streets surrounding the New York Stock Exchange are deserted as financial markets remain closed for the second day due to superstorm Sandy, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012. (AP) ? Superstorm Sandy will end up causing about $20 billion in property damages and $10 billion to $30 billion more in lost business, according to IHS Global Insight, a forecasting firm.

In the long run, the devastation the storm inflicted on New York City and other parts of the Northeast will barely nick the U.S. economy. That's the view of economists who say higher gas prices and a slightly slower economy in coming weeks will likely be matched by reconstruction and repairs that will contribute to growth over time.

The short-term blow to the economy, though, could subtract about 0.6 percentage point from U.S. economic growth in the October-December quarter, IHS says. Retailers, airlines and home construction firms will likely lose some business.

The storm cut power to about 7 million homes, shut down 70 percent of East Coast oil refineries and inflicted worse-than-expected damage in the New York metro area. That area produces about 10 percent of U.S. economic output.

New York City was all but closed off by car, train and air. The superstorm overflowed the city's waterfront, flooded the financial district and subway tunnels and cut power to hundreds of thousands. Power is expected to be fully restored in Manhattan and Brooklyn within four days.

Most homeowners who suffered losses from flooding won't be able to benefit from their insurance policies. Standard homeowner policies don't cover flood damage, and few homeowners have flood insurance.

Across U.S. industries, disruptions will slow the economy temporarily. Some restaurants and stores will draw fewer customers. Factories may shut down or hold shorter shifts because of a short-term drop in customer demand.

Some of those losses won't be so easily made up. Restaurants that lose two or three days of business, for example, won't necessarily experience a rebound later. And money spent to repair a home may lead to less spending elsewhere.

With some roads in the Northeast impassable after the storm, drivers won't be filling up as much. That will slow demand for gasoline. Pump prices, which had been declining before the storm, will likely keep slipping. The national average for a gallon of regular fell by about a penny Tuesday, to $3.53 ? more than 11 cents lower than a week ago.

Shipping and business travel has been suspended in areas of the Northeast. More than 15,000 flights across the Northeast and the world have been grounded, and it will take days for some passengers to get where they're going.

On Tuesday, more than 6,000 flights were canceled, according to the flight-tracking service FlightAware. More than 500 flights scheduled for Wednesday were also canceled.

The three big New York airports were closed Tuesday by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. New York has the nation's busiest airspace, so cancellations there drastically affect travel in other cities.

Economists noted that the hit to the economy in the short run was worsened by the size of the population centers the storm hit.

"Sandy hit a high-population-density area with a lot of expensive homes," said Beata Caranci, deputy chief economist at TD Bank.

Hurricane damage to homes, businesses and roads reduces U.S. wealth. But it doesn't subtract from the government's calculation of economic activity.

By contrast, rebuilding and restocking by businesses and consumers add to the nation's gross domestic product ? the broadest gauge of economic production. GDP measures all goods and services produced in the United States.

Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, expects the storm to shave 0.1 to 0.2 percentage point from annual economic growth in the October-December quarter. He's forecasting that the economy will grow at an annual rate of 1.5 percent to 2 percent in the fourth quarter.

Ashworth says any losses this quarter should be made up later as rebuilding boosts sales at building supply stores and other companies.

"People will load up on whatever they need to make repairs ? roofing, dry wall, carpeting ? to deal with the damage," he says.

In the short run, Caranci said the economic damage could be heaviest for small businesses that lack the money and other resources to withstand lost sales.

"It will remain to be seen how long disruptions to electricity and infrastructure persist," she said.

But she noted that the storm should give a boost to the construction industry, which shed millions of workers after the housing bust. Many who lost construction jobs were skilled employees with disproportionately high pay, and the loss of those jobs hit the economy hard.

Economists expect that the actual damages from Hurricane Sandy will exceed those caused last year by Hurricane Irene, which cost $15.8 billion. Irene had little effect on the nation's growth.

Sandy will likely be among the 10 costliest hurricanes in U.S. history. It would still be far below the worst ? Hurricane Katrina, which cost $108 billion and caused 1,200 deaths in 2005.

But "there is every reason to believe that the hurricane won't kick the legs out of an already-fragile US economy," Caranci said.

Andrea Wachter: Speaking vs. Stuffing Your Truth

Most of us do not easily speak our truth. Our behavior is determined by years of conditioning. We are told, "Be nice and polite," and "Don't hurt anyone's feelings." We may be so bogged down with shoulds and shouldn'ts that we find it hard to identfy our true feelings and needs, much less respectfully and responsibly communicate them to others.

There are basically four options when it comes to speaking vs. stuffing your truth:

Option number one is to stuff our truth down -- also known as passivity, and this can potentially lead to problems with substance abuse and/or feelings of depression.

Option number two is to blast our truth out -- also known as aggression. This can be seen as violence, yelling, road rage, or even being sarcastic or mean.

Option three is a combo plate, which is known as passive-aggressive. It might seem kind, but it is really aggressive. For example, someone smiles and agrees to do something for you, but then makes sarcastic comments while they do it.

And option number four is assertiveness. This is when you express your truth safely and responsibly and from the heart.

Whether you are enraged, sad, hurt, terrified or in need, there is always (and I have never found an exception to this!) a way to say it with respect.

I was once coaching a client in speaking her truth to an intimidating neighbor. She got clear on what she wanted to say, and she even practiced with me a few times. The following week she came in and said, "I spoke my truth but it didn't work. He was rude back to me."

But the definition of it "working" has nothing to do with how the other person responds. Of course it's great if they calmly hear you and then negotiate or apologize 'til you both feel clear, but that's the ideal situation and will not always be the case. It takes two people speaking this language in order for that to happen. You can only be in charge of the language you speak.

So whether you speak your truth aloud, email it, text it, or write it down and send it in an envelope with a stamp on it, what matters most is that you honor it. The less you stuff down your truth, the less likely it will come blasting out unkindly and the less need you will have to keep it down in unhealthy ways like overeating, drug use, alcoholism, smoking, or excessive screen time.

Here are some tips to improve your truth-telling:

1. Ask yourself how you really feel and what you really want and need.

Sometimes we need to get quiet and sift through resentment, blame, defensiveness and made-up stories in order to get to the innocent truth inside of us. Even if the other person can't give you what you ask for, you still benefit by improving your communication skills.

2. Ask the other person if it's a good time to talk.

It's always a good idea to check in with the other person if you are going to say something difficult and make sure it's a good time for them, or to set up a time that works for you both.

3. Speak your truth, respectfully and non-judgmentally.

If you are used to stuffing your truth down, it might come out harshly at first. It takes practice to say what you mean but not in a mean way.

4. Be non-blaming and non-defensive.

Stay open to understanding their side as well. If you don't get aggressive or defensive, it is really hard for things to escalate. They might not go smoothly and respectfully, but it will only turn into a full-blown war if you both participate in fighting. It's a skill to take in feedback without crumbling, defending or blaming.

5. Stick to the facts rather than interpretations, assumptions and stories.

It's so easy to make up stories about why someone did or said something. You might even try checking out your stories and find that there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for someone's actions.

6. Use "I" statements.

Try to speak about how you feel. It's very different when we say, "I feel hurt about what you said," as opposed to, "You always speak to me that way."

Using "I" statements is not just about literally starting a sentence with the word "I." It's important to watch out for sneaking in a "you" statement disguised as an "I" statement! This can sound like, "I really feel like you are being an unreasonable jerk!"

7. Keep it brief .

Sometimes what we have to say gets lost if we use too many words. It helps to stay brief and allow the other person to respond before going on too long.

8. Stick to one subject at a time.

Many people have stifled their unresolved issues to the point that when we bring up something, they realize that they too have some things they want to throw into the mix. It can help to agree to get back to that later, but to resolve one issue at a time.

9. Allow the other person to have their response and feelings.

Allowing someone the freedom to respond the way they do can be very challenging. It doesn't mean you can't ask for what you want, but we are simply not in charge of how they respond.

10. Don't take it personally.

Remind yourself that however the other person responds, it is not about you, even if you did something that made them mad or hurt. You could do the same exact thing to five different people and they would all respond based on their history and communication skills.

11. Keep speaking your truth.

No matter how the other person responds, even if they are defensive, aggressive or even passive, you can still continue speaking your truth, respectfully!

12. Own your part.

Be open to learning where you may have contributed to the conflict. Be open to apologizing. Sometimes, a simple misunderstanding can be cleared up in an instant if we are willing to say we are sorry.

13. Ask for what you want and need and be open to negotiating.

This may sound simple, but it's not always easy for people to ask for what they want. Sometimes the other person will say yes, sometimes no, and sometimes we need to negotiate. In any case, you can continue to practice the language of respectful communication.

14. Accept that the other person's needs and wants are as important as yours.

Most of us want the other person to see it our way. But when we truly care about someone, we need to know what they feel and need, even if it's not the viewpoint we were hoping for.

So if it's scary and hard and the other person's response is unknown, why bother speaking up? One of the main reasons is that when we are stuffed with unresolved issues we often use substances over them, feel depressed over them and cannot get our needs met because of them. And it is not possible to have intimate and healthy relationships without there being some glitches. It's just not real. It's not real for it to be 70 degrees with a light breeze every day, and it's not real for relationships to go smoothly all the time. There are going to be glitches and we can get better at dealing with them. The key is to look at your part without being a doormat, and to speak your truth without being aggressive.

Now, this doesn't mean we must express our every thought. Sometimes we express what we are feeling to someone else who makes us feel safe, and not the person directly. Sometimes we are able to work through it and truly let it go, and sometimes we need to find a way to say it or to write it in order to be clear and resolved.

It can help, if you are new at this, to let the person know and ask them to please be patient with you. Fortunately we don't have to do it perfectly, and we can always ask for a do-over or come back to something if we need to. That's why we call it ongoing communication.

Therapist and author Dan Wile writes, "A fight is never more than a sentence away. By the same token, intimacy is never more than a sentence away."

Project Management and Change Management Go Hand in Hand ...

Statistically, both project management and change management effort have 70%+ of failure rate, it also spurs many provocative debates on how to manage?projects more smoothly, such as: How do you view the disciplines of change management and project management? Complimentary, Redundant, or Conflicting?

  1. Project Management (PM) & Change Management (CM) are Two Sides of Coin

?

Without surprise, most industry experts think PM and CM are complimentary with each other; PM without CM, is one of the key reasons why so many projects have failed and why so many organizations have not embraced project management in their culture and operations. The lack of CM, has brought skepticism to organizations as business rarely be able to quantity the benefits originally stated in the Business Case ? which is where Change Management comes in. This is not the only reason though; there are a few more as important such as leadership, strategy., etc.?
  • CM means a lot of things: Change Management is the discipline of assessing for, planning, and mitigating risk. If you mean Change/Release/Validation processes, then they would seem to be a natural extension of a project; if you mean Human and Organizational Change Management, then, that too would seem to be a natural result of every project - the point of all projects and all system is change;
    ???? ????
  • PM & CM are Two Sides of Coin: A properly designed and implemented CM & PM system are a "must have"; Change management and project management are two sides of the same coin. Either one without the other, results in an incomplete transaction.?Change Management is one of many components of a project, and they go hand-in-hand. Projects follow change management processes and adhere to the policies in order to implement required design, new, and/or changing implementations.?
  • CM and PM are complimentary Ying & Yang. The interaction of these two objects causes everything to happen in any project environment. Furthermore, the size of the organization will influence the level of debate. In large enterprises, change management has a purpose in assuring that operation of the business is not disrupted by a single change, or a few changes. Project Management is a plan to make changes; and to destabilize the current situation. In a large enterprise,? PM should (must) account for operational readiness, yet there are so many changes, that CM is required to funnel and manage a large number of changes to the operation. In a small business and many medium size businesses, there are fewer operational elements, systems, or players, so that PM and CM tend to blend together into project management.
  • CM is Subset of PM, or PM is Subset of CM? ?Many PMs don't consider CM as part of PM, but without a doubt if you neglect Change Management you are at risk at having a failed project, especially if it affects users. On the other hand, some think PM is a discipline within Change Management, other components include Stakeholder Management and Communications Management. So PM is a subset of CM.
  • People are Key in CM: Change management that addresses the 'people change' aspects of a project is more important than ANY 'really cool' technology deployment.
  • Best Practice: Both CM & PM should work complementary for each project, a change from the as-is situation will move to a "to-be" situation. In practice, you can map "Kotter" (8-step Change) with Project Management. Big projects typically fail because "change" is not taken seriously. Change management practices are supportive of project management. They aid in control of "feature creep" and help to maintain scope and deliverable stability across the project lifecycle.
  • Some Argument: Change Management can exist without Project Management, but Project Management cannot exist without Change Management.?Well, if we think Project Management is beyond managing IT or software project only, treat Change Management itself as project, such as culture change, it may also need the set of change principles to sustain the changes. ?

  1. Change Management is the necessary pre- and post-requisite to Project Management.

?

Change Management is the necessary pre- and post-requisite to Project Management. If a project is not changing something, then why do it?
  • PM should integrate with CM into the project planning. Make sure the business understands this, and that it is built into each of the plans and estimates. If it needs to be modified, then manage it under Risk Management. Changes in scope are inevitable on any project. In dealing with them effectively, Change management and Project management go hand in hand.
  • Change managers must select an appropriate project management process. At least they need two stages, plan and implement; Change management is the most important part of the overall project. This may be the physical, technical and is always the psychological/cultural changes that are required when any change is made in a business of those who will be at all affected from the results of the project.?.?
  • Complimentary/intricately linked. The change management process should initiate project management and complete with the scheduling change. A robust change/project management process will ensure proper design, acceptance criteria etc.,?
  • Ensure your projects don?t cannibalize testing, user training and learning: mandate comprehensive testing, extremely well resourced, continuously available training and learning, then the change will happen.
  • Consistency A well designed CM & PM system will ensure consistency in the use of established processes, ensure compliance with agreed policies and enable all reporting required for management of KPIs, SLAs and other audit related issues.?
  • From Good Project Manager to Great Influencer: No matter how well the project manager managed the project, came in under budget or time, she/he may not have achieved the cultural change required to adopt any changes in process or operation that the project was all about implementing. She/he may in fact be a great manager of a project team, but not a good influencer of people to embrace change after the project is implemented.

  1. Change management is core discipline and strategic Policy in Project Management

  • Project Leadership Discipline: Leadership must work hand-in-glove with PM throughout the project life cycle to ensure all the necessary elements of success are in place; and intervene if/when they are not, it's because creating and sustaining change is a leadership responsibility requiring strong governance ?/sponsorship on both the IT and business side; PMs define & implement the mechanics of the change while Leadership must create the need/culture for change (Executive support, alignment, incentives, understanding, communication, policies & procedures, etc.) which ensure the success of the project.?
  • Change management is one of the core disciplines which helps ensure an IT project is "ready" to go live in production. A mature project readiness review process will include several system management control points. However, change Management is often overlooked and done poorly. An hour or two of training and then someone "checks off" change management. Successful CM requires high level consulting and people skills and every situation is different. PM has some specific disciplines. But do not confuse Project Tracking and resource management with true PM.
  • CM is a strategic policy, PM is tactical for project managers: Project Management gets you from A to B. Change Management ensures that while getting to B the business does not experience negative impact.
  • CM is everyone's responsibility. Change management is often done poorly, and left to what would be better-described as a training team., and should never be delegated to "B team" players who spend their time creating documents rather than talking to stakeholders which also requires a lot of skills to be effectives.
  • CM as Discipline to Continuous Improvement: Change management is one of many disciplines needed to deliver business transformation, or business improvement, or a program/project. Change Management could happen in an operational setting where the CM task becomes the project. Project management includes an embedded CM component. CM + PM ++ = Continuous Improvement
  • CM as Communication Guideline: Project management is focused on internal/project resources and change management is focused on stakeholders external to the project team. Software Projects are done to automate processes among other reasons, the project needs change management to ensure completion within time and budget. Once developed, the change has to be effectively communicated within the organization and that?s the real role for change management. Many times, change management is the most important, least cared field, since it is seen as a soft discipline in a world of engineers.
  • CM like GPS: Act in current operations or processes, introduction of more progressive ways of achieving the same result, normally for increased efficiency or added value. All these need a vehicle to arrive at the desired point. CM like GPS, smoothes the way, provides the route to understanding, acceptance and adoption..

?Therefore, the very nature of project management must incorporate change management elements. Change management similarly must consider project management principles in its implementation

Navy replaces admiral leading Mideast strike group

(AP) ? The Navy said Saturday it is replacing the admiral in command of an aircraft carrier strike group in the Middle East, pending the outcome of an internal investigation into undisclosed allegations of inappropriate judgment.

Rear Adm. Charles M. Gaouette is being sent back to the USS John C. Stennis' home port at Bremerton, Wash., in what the Navy called a temporary reassignment. The Navy said he is not formally relieved of his command of the Stennis strike group but will be replaced by Rear Adm. Troy M. Shoemaker, who will assume command until the investigation is completed.

It is highly unusual for the Navy to replace a carrier strike group commander during its deployment.

The Navy did not reveal details of the allegations, citing only an accusation of "inappropriate leadership judgment" that arose during the strike group's deployment to the Middle East. Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Navy's chief spokesman, declined to discuss the investigation.

The Stennis group deployed from Bremerton in late August and had entered the Navy 5th Fleet's area of operations in the Middle East on Oct. 17 after sailing across the Pacific. The Stennis made port visits in Thailand and Malaysia on its way to the Middle East.

It deployed four months earlier than scheduled in response to a request by the commander of U.S. Central Command, Marine Gen. James Mattis, to maintain two aircraft carriers in the Middle East. The Stennis replaced the USS Enterprise carrier group.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta visited the Stennis and its sailors in Bremerton shortly before they departed. He thanked them for accelerating their deployment on short notice.

"I understand that it is tough," Panetta said. "We are asking an awful lot of each of you, but frankly you are the best I have and when the world calls we have to respond."

(AP) ? A Syrian warplane flattened a three-story building, suspected rebels detonated a deadly car bomb and both sides traded gunfire in several hotspots across the country Saturday, activists said, leaving a U.N.-backed holiday truce in tatters on its second day.

The unraveling of the cease-fire marked the latest setback to ending Syria's civil war through diplomacy. Foreign military intervention is unlikely, raising the grim prospect of a drawn-out war of attrition between President Bashar Assad and those trying to topple him.

The proposed four-day truce during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha had been a long shot from the start since international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi failed to get solid commitments from all combatants. Fighting dropped off in the first hours of the cease-fire Friday, but by the end of the day, activists said 151 people had been killed in bombings and shootings, a standard daily toll in Syria.

On Saturday, the first regime airstrike since the start of the truce reduced a three-story building in the Arbeen suburb of the capital, Damascus to rubble, killing at least eight men, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which compiles reports from activists.

In the remote eastern town of Deir el-Zour, assailants detonated a car bomb near a military police compound, then opened fire at those rushing to the scene, killing a total of eight people and causing extensive damage, the Observatory said. Syrian media denied there were casualties. The attack bore the hallmarks of Jabhat al-Nusra, a radical rebel-allied Islamic group that has rejected the cease-fire.

The Syrian air force also bombed rebel positions Saturday during a fierce battle for control over the main road linking Aleppo, Syria's largest city, with the capital, activists said. Earlier this month, rebels seized Maaret al-Numan, a town along the highway and besieged a nearby military base, disrupting regime supplies to embattled Aleppo. The Syrian air force has responded with sustained bombing raids on area villages.

By late Saturday, at least 76 people had been killed across Syria, including 20 Syrian soldiers, activists said. The Observatory reported deadly regime shelling and sniper attacks in several locations, while Syrian state-media said rebels ambushed a number of military positions.

Military analyst Joe Holliday said neither side has an incentive to halt fighting, noting that rebels have disrupted regime supply routes to the northern provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. "The regime can't accept the current military status quo without a fight and the rebels have no reason to since they believe they have the momentum," said Holliday, a researcher at the Institute for the Study of War in Washington.

Brahimi's spokesman declined comment Saturday on the apparent failure of his initiative. It's not clear what Brahimi's next move could be, since the international community is divided over the Syria conflict that erupted 19 months ago.

Assad allies Russia and China have shielded the regime against harsher U.N. Security Council sanctions, while the rebels' foreign backers have shied away from military intervention.

The U.S., meanwhile, is averse to sending strategic weapons to help the rebels break the battlefield stalemate, fearing they will fall into the hands of militant Islamists, who are increasingly active in rebel ranks. The al-Qaida-inspired Jabhat al-Nusra, for example, is believed to be on the front lines in Aleppo and near Maaret al-Numan.

When Brahimi, the U.N.-Arab League envoy, first floated the idea of a holiday truce, he did not say what his long-term plan was. Even a temporary reduction in violence during such a truce would not have been a springboard for talks between Assad and the opposition on ending the war. Syria's opposition says it will only negotiate if Assad resigns, a step the Syrian leader has refused to take.

Some said Brahimi's initiative allowed a paralyzed international community to show briefly that it was doing something to try to end the war that has claimed more than 35,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands.

Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Doha Center said the truce at least "provides the illusion of movement, that something is being done, that the international community is still trying to find a solution."

The U.S. said Friday that both sides have violated the holiday cease-fire, but singled out the regime. In the previous attempted truce six months ago, the Syrian military violated key provisions, such as withdrawing troops from urban centers, and was widely held responsible for the collapse of the cease-fire.

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdessi on Saturday accused the U.S. of being one-sided. He said Syria remains committed to halting military operations. He said all cease-fire violations were the result of attacks, most of them carried out by organizations that originally rejected the truce, an apparent reference to Jabhat al-Nusra. The spokesman said Syria has sent messages to the U.N. Security Council concerning the violations.

Syrian state media accused the rebels of breaking the truce from the start.

One of the deadliest attacks Friday was a car bomb attack in a residential area of Damascus.

The state-run news agency SANA on Saturday quoted the director of Damascus Hospital, Dr. Adib Mahmoud, as saying the hospital received 15 dead civilians, including eight children, and 92 wounded, among them 65 children. Activists had put the death toll at 11.

Also Saturday, Lebanese broadcaster LBC TV said journalist Fidaa Itani, one of its employees covering Syria's civil war, was detained by the rebels and is being held in the town of Azaz near the Turkish border.

The station quoted a local rebel leader in Azaz, Abu Ibrahim, as saying that rebels suspected Itani after he filmed many videos of rebels operations in Aleppo. Itani's Lebanese cellphone was closed when The Associated Press tried to reach him.

The area also was the site of the May kidnapping of 11 Shiite Lebanese pilgrims who were on their way home from Iran. Two have been released while rebels say they will hold the others until Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon's militant Hezbollah group, apologizes to the Syrian people for supporting Assad.

Fox Chase researchers find that men whose testosterone falls after radiation are more likely to experience a rise in PSA

BOSTON, MA (October 28, 2012)Men whose testosterone drops following radiation therapy for prostate cancer are more likely to experience a change in PSA levels that signals their cancer has returned, according to new research from Fox Chase Cancer Center. The findings will be presented on October 29 at the American Society for Radiation Oncology's 54th Annual Meeting.

Specifically, men whose testosterone fell following various forms of radiation therapy were more likely to experience an increase in prostate-specific antigen (PSA)often the first indication the cancer has recurred.

"The men who had a decrease in testosterone also appear to be the men more likely to see an increase in PSA after treatment," says study author Jeffrey Martin, MD, resident physician in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Fox Chase.

In theory, doctors may one day be able to use testosterone levels to guide treatment decisions, says Martin. "For men with a decrease in testosterone, doctors might intervene earlier with other medications, or follow their PSA more closely than they would otherwise, to spot recurrences at an earlier time."

Martin and his colleagues decided to conduct the study because there is limited information regarding testosterone levels after radiation treatment and what it means for prognosis. To investigate whether a decrease in testosterone has any clinical effects, Martin and his colleagues reviewed medical records from nearly 260 men who received radiation therapy for prostate cancer between 2002 and 2008. The men were treated with either brachytherapy, in which doctors insert radioactive seeds in the prostate, or intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), in which an external beam of radiation is directed at the prostate.

The researchers found that testosterone levels tended to decrease following both forms of radiation therapy. And men who experienced a post-radiation drop in testosterone particularly a significant dropwere more likely to see their PSA levels rise during the follow-up period.

Still, an increase in PSAknown as biochemical failurewas relatively rare, the authors found. "Only 4% of patients with low-risk prostate cancer had biochemical failure at five years," says Martin.

Even though researchers have seen testosterone decrease following another form of radiation, these latest findings are still somewhat surprising, says Martin, because testosterone is believed to drive prostate cancer. In fact, some patients with advanced forms are prescribed hormone therapy that attempts to knock down testosterone.

"Seeing that a drop in testosterone is tied to recurrence is kind of a surprising result," says Martin. "We don't necessarily know what this means yet. I think the relationship between testosterone levels following radiation therapy and prognosis needs more study, and until then it's premature to say this is something patients should ask their doctors about."

This was a small study that needs to be validated in a larger group of men before doctors begin basing their predictions of recurrence on patients' testosterone levels, he cautions. "I think the link between testosterone and PSA needs more study, in a larger set of patients."

Giles Fraser Challenges Church about Economics at Cork Clergy ...

The London-based philosopher, priest and journalist, the Rev. Dr Giles Fraser gave four challenging and tantalising addresses at this year?s Cork, Cloyne and Ross Clergy Conference last week at Ballylickey.? Giles, a columnist with The Guardian, who famously resigned as a Canon of St Paul?s Cathedral, London at this time last year in the wake of the Church?s response to ?Occupy London?, opted for a topical subject: finance and economics.? His wide-ranging and gripping addresses were on the subjects of Christianity and money, theological reflections on economics and the current crisis, thoughts about Occupy, as well as on the role of the Church in modern society generally.

Canon Paul Willoughby (left), local rector, shares a joke with the speaker at the 2012 CCR Clergy Conference in Ballylickey, the Reverend Dr Giles Fraser.

San Francisco Buttermilk Biscuits from TV Food and Drink - Brought ...

On Friday, everyone asked me at work with vibrant hopeful faces, ?What are you gonna do in San Francisco, Gary??

?I?m gonna sit on Sean?s couch, drink coffee and watch tv.?

Then everyone at work looked at me with sadness and pity slivers.

Why they expected more out of me is a mystery. When regularly asked, ?What are you doing this weekend, Gary?? I always answer the same: ?I?m going to stay home and put things away where they belong!?

photo.JPG

Because I don?t travel well, I close my eyes once I?m in my seat on the plane and imagine all the fun things I can do in San Francisco? bay cruise, cable car museum, Coit Tower, Castro Theatre. ?I continue to think about them as I sit on Sean?s oversize Crate and Barrel end chair and watch Food Network all Saturday long in my bedtime stretchy shorts and a slightly rough Indian blanket wrapped around my legs while Sean suggests activities for us:

?We could walk around Haight and see parts of the city we don?t normally see.?
?No.?
?Let?s go to Union Square and look for New Year?s clothes.?
?Why??
?We can go to Pearl?s and get hamburgers.?
?Stop talking. ?I can?t hear Pioneer Woman.?

From time to time, I?ll play with the new cat, Toby. ?He gets his weekend exercise flailing around trying to catch a bushel of colored feathers attached to the end of a plastic stick. ?I get my exercise shaking the stick.

photo.JPG

I would have slept in until noon, but because I don?t drink anymore, that?s nearly impossible now. My eyes opened at 8am. So I dragged myself into the living room, closed all the curtains Sean had opened to let the sun shine in, plopped down in my usual spot and looked for the remote control. It was on the far side of the couch, so when Sean got back from picking up everything he needed to make buttermilk biscuits, I asked him to ?hand it to me.

I like San Francisco. ?But more than San Francisco I like Sean. ?He says things like, ?I?m never eating pizza again!? and ?The Pioneer Woman looks like a fat Molly Ringwald,? and makes me breakfast so I have more time to channel surf. ?It?s in the mid-seventies in San Francisco today. I?m totally gonna get caught up on The Mindy Project.
