Think back to Mobile World Congress 2012 for a minute. Remember when Nokia took home that brag-worthy award of Best New Mobile Handset?for its new Pureview technology? It was a pretty big deal, because the camera was crammed into a Symbian phone. Had it not been for that beefy 41-megapixel camera in the Pureview 808, the handset wouldn't have had a chance. But it did, and Nokia ran with it.
The Finnish smartphone maker pimped its Carl Zeiss-backed Pureview in its popular Lumia 920 -- but not the same version we saw win the award at MWC. No, the 920's current camera is a standard 8-megapixels (yawn). At the time of the handset's launch, Nokia went so far as to lie -- or, to put it lightly "simulate" -- exactly what its lauded optics could do. People weren't very pleased, but the negative press passed rather quickly.
And now it looks like Nokia may no longer have to resort to unnecessary and foolish tactics in a sneaky attempt to win over buyers, as its 41-megapixel camera is rumored to soon make its way to the Lumia lineup. This would include the 820 and 920, and it's expected to launch as soon as this summer in the U.S.
Whether or not your smartphone really needs such a sensor is, for some, a matter of opinion. But it could be a smart move for Nokia as more smartphone manufacturers push to separate their handsets from the herd. And since a good majority of mobile users now use their phones for their main source of memory-making, a slick camera can certainly serve as a strong selling point (especially when it's not running on an outdated Symbian).?
Of course, Nokia is being tight-lipped about the whole thing. As a company spokesperson told The Guardian, "While we are delighted with the attention the Nokia Lumia range continues to gather, it has been our long-held policy not to comment on market rumours or speculation."
